French striker Kenzo Kies, a 21-year-old Guingamp player, died on Wednesday at the hospital after drowning on Monday in the Rhone, near Lyon. The football world is in mourning.

Who was Kenzo Kies?

Kenzo Kies started playing football at FC Lyon before continuing his training at Olympique Lyonnais and then at AS Saint-Priest.

In 2018, he joined the AS Saint-Etienne training center, where he stayed for seven seasons. Les Verts also paid tribute to him, praising a talented player and a discreet young man appreciated by all.

After his adventure in Saint-Etienne, he signed with Guingamp to continue his progress in National 3. However, his club specifies that several injuries slowed down his first season under the Breton colors.

The tragedy

The tragedy occurred on Monday afternoon, when four young men were swimming in the Rhone, at the level of the Parc de la Feyssine, between Villeurbanne and Caluire-et-Cuire. Three of them were rescued. Kenzo Kies, rescued in emergency after being carried away by the current, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
